YOU MATTER

On April 1, 2024, I made a decision to leave my position as the City Attorney for the City of Vicksburg. This decision was hard to make. Prior to making this decision, I prayed and cried because I truly enjoyed being a participant in the creation of legislation and seeing plans turn into projects.

It was truly a bittersweet moment. However, when I became barred to practice law in 2006, I wanted to be a fearless advocate for voiceless clients both in and outside of court. The first time I was asked to work for the City, I declined. But when another opportunity presented itself, I accepted. I loved interacting with my coworkers and even the difficult work had its moments of satisfaction.

Former Ward 1 Alderman Michael Mayfield, Sr. once told me "don't get used to the roar of the crowd" meaning you cannot always be led by what the multitude or majority wants you to do. Sometimes you have to be led by the roar within you and your own heart. So now, I am excited because I soon will return to what I love to do--roaring in courtrooms near you.

I am BACK!

Speaking presents me with a platform to educate, engage and entertain listeners. I am often asked to speak about the law or to empower listeners to live stronger, happier lives.

After I finished speaking on women empowerment at an event, a young lady came and thanked me for being an example to women. I shared with her that I am not perfect and oftentimes, I speak to encourage others and myself.

She later hired me to represent her. As a result, we talked often about a lot of topics. She had a hearty laugh, beautiful smile and kind spirit. She made a surprise visit to the office one day to ask my advice on a non-legal issue. She demanded with tears in her eyes that I respond as if she was a friend not client. We talked and prayed. She left the office with a sense of peace.

A few weeks later, I received a call that she died tragically. But for my speaking engagement, we never would have crossed paths. She said I empowered her with my words but she will never know she empowered me with her transparency, presence and life. The words bring life to the action. The action is more empowering.

I remember observing an attorney talking to his client in court. The client was a young man who ALLEGEDLY assaulted his disabled mother because she would not give him money to support his drug habit. The attorney kept telling the client that the evidence against him was overwhelming because there was a video of the assault. He told his client to enter a plea of guilty and receive probation and drug rehab.

The client got mad calling the attorney a bunch of expletives and incompetent. "Man, it ain't my fault you are a sucky attorney. I ain't pleading guilty to nothing." The attorney approached the Judge and asked to be released from representing the client who was later found guilty and sentenced to jail. As he was being led off by the officers, the client said, "it's that stupid attorney's fault that I gotta go to jail. He don't need no law license."

Make it make sense?
